Alt-J are touring in support of their debut album "An Awesome Wave," which won the 2012 Mercury Prize.
Veering wildly from psychedelic avant-pop to skeletal-folktronica, the finished album promises to trade in understated beauty one minute and epic oddities the next. Just as you'd expect from a debut album that tackles everything from love to bullfighting to the heroic life of the 1930s war photographer Gerda Taro who was crushed by a tank on the frontline. Other tracks are inspired by cinema, including 'Matilda' (about Natalie Portman's character in Luc Besson's "Leon") and "The Good, The Bad And The Ugly"-referencing "Tessellate."
The band also performed well on various readers' polls, with a top 20 album and #2 Best New Band on Stereogum's Gummy Awards and the #2 Rookie of the Year on Consequence of Sound's readers poll. In their annual installment of the Pitchfork's Readers Poll, "An Awesome Wave" was selected as the #3 Most Underrated Album, and alt-J were voted the #6 Best New Artist. The band's song "Buffalo" was also included in the Golden Globe and Oscar-winning new film by David O. Russell, "Silver Lining's Playbook," featuring Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper and Robert De Niro.
