San Francisco

Even though San Francisco seems better known as an adult’s city, it was one of my favorite places to visit as a child. Back then, we would beg to visit the city constantly! My parents would take us to all of the kid (and adult) museums and we would all stare in wonder, ask probing questions, and leave hungry for more information. I truly think it instilled a love of learning in me early on, and contributed to my thirst for knowledge as an adult. I wanted to reach back into my memories and live like a kid once again in the city by the bay. Read on for our favorite stops for culture in San Francisco when you’re visiting with little ones.

The Exploratorium is one of my FAVORITES in all of San Francisco (and that’s coming from both 8-year-old Olivia and current-day Olivia). Step inside a tornado, turn upside down in a curved mirror, walk on a fog bridge, and explore more than 650 hands-on exhibits during your trip to the Exploratorium. As an added bonus, the museum provides PlayLists, which are 20-minute self-guided tours of a handful of exhibits, and provide even more information on some favorite stops.

Aquarium of the Bay

An obvious way to every kid’s heart is animals! Every animal your tiny explorers can imagine is housed in the Aquarium of the Bay. This one is a bit farther from the heart of the city, but well worth the drive if you have animal lovers in your family. A huge proponent of conservation, this is both good for the environment and the brain! Learn about your favorite animals and help save the planet! Win-win!

Children’s Creativity Museum

This museum is all about inspiriting even the youngest children to create with their own two hands. As creators by nature, we considered one of our absolute favorites. With imagination, animation and tech labs, there’s something for everyone! All ages are welcome here, and the projects and activities are exceptional for every creative mind. Plus, I’m sure I speak for many parents when I say that anywhere we can sneak education into amusement is a win.

Ok guys, this is a new one, so admittedly I didn’t visit here as a child, but I visited as an adult and was living my ultimate childhood dream. This is an entire museum devoted to the worship of ice cream, and of course, I am all in. This museum is so beautiful, and such a fun spot for kids and adults alike to indulge in the creativity of everyone’s fave dessert. Make a note to visit this during your upcoming travels, as its only in San Francisco until February of 2018!
