The Low Down on New Year’s Resolution Success

Isn’t it hard to believe that the New Year is here already? It seems like it was only yesterday that we were savoring our favorite summer desserts in Annapolis! But as we dream of melting ice cream and sweet tres leches, we know that New Year’s resolutions are right around the corner. So we began to wonder… what is the key to New Year’s resolution success?

A lot of us choose physical health when it comes to resolutions, yet according to U.S. News and World Report, 80% of people ditch these goals by February. So, if you’re looking to make 2018 your best year yet, consider these tips and healthy recipes for keeping your New Year’s resolutions:

Invest in Group Fitness & Reap the Benefits

Accountability is everything! So as you make your fitness-related New Year’s resolutions, consider checking out a group fitness class. Boutique style gyms are currently all the rage and they’re popping up everywhere.

Air Fry Your Way to a Clean Diet

Want to stick to a healthy diet for your New Year’s resolution, but hate the idea of actually dieting? Same here! Which is why we were thrilled to discover our new favorite kitchen accessory: the air fryer!

The air fryer is a total time saver. There is no need to pre-heat like a normal oven, cooking time typically ranges from 10 to 30 minutes, and clean up is simple. And did we mention that you can cook virtually anything in one of these bad boys? Check out our two favorite air fried recipes:

Air Fried Lemon Pepper Scallops

For all our low-carb dieters! Simply coat the basket with non-stick spray, place a few lemon slices with 10-15 scallops in the basket and air fry for 9 minutes at 340°F. We love to pair our scallops with spinach and avocado oil!

Air Fried Old Bay Chicken Wings

Yes… you read that correctly, wings! Air fried wings eliminate the use of fatty oils and carb-loaded breading.

And you know we wouldn’t be making wings in Annapolis without Old Bay seasoning… so simply coat 10–15 raw chicken wings in Old Bay seasoning and air fry for 30 minutes at 370°F. Open and shake your basket every 5 minutes to cook evenly… and enjoy your wings, guilt-free!

Maintain Your Sanity & Enjoy Eating Out

Ever feel a bit isolated while trying to stick to a New Year’s diet? Being strict has its advantages, but it often results in some serious FOMO (fear of missing out). This New Year, don’t give up on great experiences and delicious food. You CAN have your cake and eat it too with the right mindset (well, not literally — cake definitely isn’t on the diet). When dining out, remember these tips for healthy eating and you’ll be golden:

  • Check the menu before you leave for the restaurant. Get a feel for dish options and what will best fit your diet (we live by Yelp!)
  • Don’t be afraid to substitute. If you want to nix the cheese out your dish, don’t let feeling “complicated” stop you.
  • When in doubt, order the fish. White fish is a terrific choice for a low-fat diet. While higher in fat than other fish, salmon packs in heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids. So for all you salmon lovers, the salmon at BAROAK Cookhouse & Taproom is a great choice (however, keep to those New Year’s resolutions and hold the sour cream and the load on the sweet potato!)

Dream. Plan. Go. There’s no reason 2018 won’t be your year for New Year’s success.
