See Spot surf at the “Loews Coronado Bay Resort Surf Dog Competition,” the nation’s original surfing competition for man’s best friend. Now in its seventh year, this summer’s event is expected to draw more than 60 surf dogs and thousands of spectators from across the U.S.
This popular canine competition is an extension of Loews Hotels’ award-winning Loews Loves Pets program and has become a hugely successful fundraiser for non-profit organizations. This year’s event benefits the ASPCA® (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals). The ASPCA® is the first humane organization established and is a national leader in the areas of anti-cruelty, community outreach and animal health services.
Loews Coronado Bay Resort’s Surf Dog Competition takes place on Saturday, June 16, in Imperial Beach,Calif.with an action-packed schedule featuring:
- 10:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. – Optional surfing lessons for less experienced canines
- 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. – Surfing Competition (Heats 1, 2 and 3)
- 1:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. – Ultimate Champion Round
- 1:30 p.m. – 1:45 p.m. - Celebrity Dog Competition
- 1:45 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. – Awards Ceremony
Judging will be conducted by Mayor Jim Janney, Mayor of Imperial Beach; Brian Johnson, general manager of Loews Coronado Bay Resort, Teevan McManus, owner of Coronado Surfing Academy, and a representative from the ASPCA®. Each competitor will have 10 minutes to catch his or her top two waves, and will be scored on confidence level, length of ride and overall ability to “grip it and rip it.” In addition to endless bragging rights, the winner of the Ultimate Champion Round will become the 2012 “Poster Dog” for all Loews Hotels.
Attendance is free and open to the public. The cost to enter the competition is $50 for singles and $55 for teams. All competitors score a great goody bag and competition medal. Additional activities include onsite food trucks, face painting, photo booths and sponsor giveaways.
