Heavy Seas Flavor Partner

Annapolis and the Chesapeake Bay area have always been known for fresh seafood like the famed Maryland Blue Crab and succulent Rockfish. However, it is also quickly becoming known outside of the seafood world for its culinary creativity and variety throughout the Mid-Atlantic region, and we’ve partnered with some of the region’s finest to give our guests the opportunity to taste the best of Maryland.

Heavy Seas Beer

Heavy Seas Flavor Partner

The best part about the Flavor by Loews Hotels program is telling the stories of our local partners, and Heavy Seas has a remarkable tale. In fact, for Heavy Seas founder, Hugh Sisson, beer altered the trajectory of his life.

In 1980, Hugh’s father, Albert, a Baltimore area businessman, persuaded him to come “help” at a newly opened family business, a tavern called Sisson’s. When Hugh showed up to start what he assumed would be a short-term position, his father tossed him the keys to the pub and walked out the door. Hugh realized quick success, and by 1982, Sisson’s had the largest selection of beers in Baltimore and was Baltimore’s first draft Guinness account. Hugh and his father decided to explore the idea of making their own beer at the pub. Only a handful of brewpubs existed at that time in the US, so turning Sisson’s into a brewpub was a groundbreaking concept. One big problem — brewpubs were illegal in Maryland. Undaunted, the Sissons introduced a bill in the MD Legislature in 1987 (right down the road from Loews Annapolis Hotel!) to legalize brewpubs. Much to their surprise, the bill passed on the first attempt. Sisson’s officially became Maryland’s first brewpub in August 1989, with Hugh as the brewer.

Hugh remained at Sisson’s until December 1994, when he left to form Clipper City Brewing Co., now home to Heavy Seas Beer. Today, Heavy Seas produces 18 different beer styles and distributes in 17 states. Heavy Seas has become one of the most respected and award winning craft breweries on the East Coast.

We love the Heavy Seas Loose Cannon, so make sure to stop into BAROAK Cookhouse & Taproom to check it out for yourself.

Annapolis Ice Cream Company

Annapolis Ice Cream Flavor Partner

We’re not at all surprised that Annapolis Ice Cream has been voted Best Ice Cream in Annapolis for 11 consecutive years. Walter and Nancy Giera officially opened the doors to Annapolis Ice Cream Company in 2004. After many hard years of research (yes, eating ice cream does qualify as ‘research’) and testing (SUCH HARD WORK), they were finally ready to let the public enjoy their homemade, high-quality, super-premium gourmet ice creams (thank goodness!).

The ice cream is always fresh because it is made right at the store nearly every day; the only ice cream that is actually made in Annapolis! And get this: they make all of the mix-ins too, so now it makes sense why the cookie dough in my cookie dough ice cream was to die for when I tasted it this past summer.

I am obsessed with Annapolis Ice Cream’s mint chocolate chip and peanut butter chocolate flavors, but stop by BAROAK and find your own fave.

Roseda Farms Beef

Roseda Beef Flavor Partner

Beef. It’s what’s for dinner. And breakfast, and lunch, and happy hour!

About 60 years ago, the beef industry changed. In a rush to get beef to market, breeding cattle became less about quality and more about quantity.  Dry aging beef for flavor and tenderness was left behind.

So, when Eddie started Roseda Beef with his dad, he went back to the old days. With the help of computer technology, the Roseda team selected breeding traits, like marbling, to produce the best eating experience for customers. And most importantly, they returned to the days before mass production when people didn’t feed cattle growth hormones or daily antibiotics. They run Roseda as a farm, not a factory. And we can taste the difference in every bite of our breakfast burger, sliders, BAROAK burger and Righteous Felon beef jerky (another partner that sources all of their hormone & antibiotic free beef from Roseda).

We’ve had a blast finding the best possible local food and drink artisans to bring the flavors of Maryland into the walls of our hotel. Be sure to stop in and check them out, and stay tuned for new flavors to come!
