A Guide to Dog-Friendly NYC

As winter thaws into spring, we know you and your four-legged friend are long overdue for some outdoor time. If an NYC trip is on your agenda this spring, the good news is that New York City is perhaps one of the most dog-friendly places to visit. You'll enjoy an abundance of outdoor space, the company of fellow dog lovers, and plenty of ideas for the perfect dog-friendly itinerary to experience with you pup.

A Person Walking A Dog On A Leash

Central Park

Yes, this may just be the most dog-friendly place in all of New York. Central Park offers 843 acres of greenway, rocks, bodies of water, a rink — even a carousel and castle. The park has designated “off-leash hours” between 9 PM and 9 AM when your dog can run and sniff around untethered. Dogs are welcome at other times, as long as they are on a leash.

If you’re interested in joining a group, Central Park Paws meets monthly for coffee and bagels, and also organizes hound hikes. This is a great way to get outside with your pup and meet some new people. The best part? Central Park is located only two blocks from Loews Regency New York, so you don’t have to travel far to start exploring.

Dog Meetups

Meet new people while getting your dog out and about by joining one of the many dog meetup groups in the city – simply search for one that piques your interest on Meetup.com. Meetups are organized by breed, dog size, neighborhood, or activity level. The ones specific to the Upper East Side are The NYC East Side Small Dog Group, welcoming all dogs roughly 18 pounds and under, and Brunch with the Dogs, a group dedicated to outdoor Upper East Side brunch spots.

The Best Shops

A trip to New York City is hardly complete without squeezing in some window shopping. Check out Canine Styles Uptown or The DOG Store, both just a few blocks from the hotel and featuring upscale dog clothing, toys and grooming services.

In need of some retail therapy for yourself? Head to the iconic Bloomingdale’s 59th Street, the upscale department store. You may even find chic outfits and accessories to buy for you and your pooch. Make sure to visit our Concierge team before you go, for an exclusive treat.

Prospect Park Dog Beach

The Prospect Park Dog Beach is a swimming hole just for dogs, and was renovated in 2016, with new rocks brought in from upstate New York. Besides the dog beach, Prospect Park offers 526 acres of green space where your furry friend can wander, roll around and relax. Connect with other Prospect Park dog owners through FIDO, “New York City's Largest Off-Leash Community” and attend year-round events.

Brooklyn Brewery

If you’ve ever fallen victim of the meme that reads, “When you’re out having a good time and realize your dog is home all alone missing you”, say no more and head to the Brooklyn Brewery. They allow you to leash your dog next to you in their tasting room so you can sample beer while your four-legged friend mixes and mingles with local pooches. Plus, there is a popular dog run in McCarren Park right next to the brewery to play in before or after your visit.

A Close Up Of Brooklyn Bridge

Brooklyn Bridge

If you’ve got your walking shoes on, take a stroll across the Brooklyn Bridge before you head to Prospect Park or Brooklyn Brewery. With a dedicated area away from the cars, it’s a great place to walk your dog, take in amazing views and pose for an iconic photo. You two can soak in sights of downtown Manhattan, the Statue of Liberty and downtown Brooklyn on the 1.3-mile stretch.
