Hollywood

The popular Museum of Ice Cream landed in LA earlier this year and to say it’s been a success is an understatement! With tickets sold out for the foreseeable future, I took it upon myself to scour the city for the most popular and impressive LA ice cream treats to enjoy. What a job, I know… 😜

McConnell’s Fine Ice Creams

I discovered this hometown Santa Barbara ice cream shop on one of my first visits to Los Angeles after checking out Grand Central Market downtown. I wasn’t sure what to expect but aside from great food vendors I came across McConnell’s and it was love at first bite. Not only have they been making their ice cream from scratch for over 70 years, but they also incorporate some of the finest ingredients around into some stellar combinations. With locations all around LA, you’re bound to find several flavor staples to tickle your taste buds like Banana & Salted Caramel, Eureka Lemon & Marionberries, Toasted Coconut Almond Chip and Whiskey & Pecan Pralines. But don’t get too stuck on one flavor because they also introduce seasonal favorites throughout the year including Rosewater & Pistachio and Hibiscus Lime. Drooling yet? If making this tough decision is too much for you go ahead and try my favorites… Chocolate Covered Strawberries & Churro con Leche!

The Milk Shop

Known for their funky Macaron Ice Cream Sandwiches with crazy toppings like Fruity Pebbles, Fruit Loops, and Lucky Charms, you’ll find The Milk Shop at two locations near Loews Hollywood Hotel. Grab a single ice cream sandwich or six-pack to take home to the family, but also make time to check out one of my favorite aspects of this modernized old-timey ice cream parlor — their creative twists on the classics like root beer floats. I love cherry cola so a Black Cherry Float always sounds awesome to me, but something even better caught my attention on their menu —the Citrus Vanilla Float! In addition to homemade vanilla bean ice cream, they throw in a scoop each of lime and blood orange sorbet and then top it off with vanilla IBC cream soda… yum! It’s got all the classic creamy elements of a root beer float but with bright and tangy fruit flavors. I’ll take two, please!

Magpies Softserve

What’s your favorite ice cream flavor? My answer is always SOFT SERVE! Yes, I know it’s not an actual flavor but when it comes to ice cream, nothing tops this super soft and creamy treat. So when I heard about Magpie’s Softserve, I made it a point to check it out… for you, of course. Their menu goes above the typical vanilla, chocolate, and choco-vanilla swirl varieties — I’m talking Red Velvet, Vanilla Latte, Peanuts & Cracker Jack and my personal choice, vegan dairy-free Horchata. But it doesn’t stop there: you then get to choose your toppings. It’s like all the best parts of a classic yogurt shop but better, with choices like butterscotch Rice Krispies, toasted maple coconut chips, hazelnut wafers, and of course sprinkles. During this maiden visit I was in the mood for chocolate hard shell (yes, just like when we were kids!) and graham cracker streusel. Boy, was I a happy camper! Between their two locations, their flavors of the day vary and tend to change every few weeks so don’t be ashamed to visit often. I know I will!
