New Orleans

If you have ever been to New Orleans, you know that there is nowhere else like it. The Loews New Orleans Hotel embraces our city’s joie de vivre and local charm in everything from our front desk backdrop, featuring a tile display of photographs depicting famous New Orleans people, places and things, to our in-room macaroon amenity by Sucré, a fabulous local chocolatier, bakery and gelateria.

Our latest uniquely local initiative (and one we are incredibly proud of) is the inclusion of local photographer Laura Steffan’s photos on our website and ultimately in an on-property installation piece. I sat down with Laura to learn more about her and her passion for photography.

Kristen: Tell me a little background on you and how your passion for photography began.

Laura: I was raised in Mandeville, LA and began experimenting with photography in high school, but did not start to take it seriously until college. I attended the University of New Orleans, where I studied photography and printmaking and during that time my love for New Orleans grew enormously.

Kristen:  When did you realize photography was what you wanted to focus on solely?

Laura: I would spend my free time exploring and getting to know the local side of the city, wandering around and photographing the charm and magic found in the unique neighborhoods. New Orleans has been a huge source of inspiration for my photography, as well as the region I spent my childhood in — the Gulf South.  Both places are responsible for making me realize that I loved photography.

Kristen: Where do you hope to go with photography?

Laura: My real passion is to travel more often and photograph landscapes and lifestyle images. A dream job would be to work with National Geographic, because I love nature and traveling and I am curious about other parts of the world. Nature inspires me often. I am in the process of making my first photo book, which will be a collection of about 60 photos of the details of New Orleans homes and architecture that I have posted on my Instagram over the last 8 months.

Kristen: What has been your proudest moment so far?

Laura: My ‘Streetcar in the Rain’ photo was displayed in a gallery and printed on the cover of a book. As I was taking it, I did not expect it to gain such recognition. It is a special photo to me.

Kristen: One more — any fun facts about you?

Laura: I am all about natural health. I sell essential oils for physical and emotional well-being. I enjoy biking around New Orleans and am interested in becoming certified to teach yoga one day.

We’re so excited to be featuring such a talented, local photographer both on our website and in our hotel. Thanks, Laura!
