New Orleans’ history was built on a strong foundation of European heritage (specifically French and Spanish) and this couldn’t be more prevalent than during the holiday season. Réveillon dinners originated with a deep connection to this cultural heritage, and the Catholic faith, that permeated the happenings of everyday life. Those preparing to take communion at Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve would fast the entire day prior. When it was time for mass, it was a family affair that everyone attended, dressed in their best. Afterwards, everyone would gather back at their homes for a grand feast — the Réveillon meal. Réveillon comes from the French word “réveiller”, meaning, “to awaken” — or rather, to stay awake well into the wee hours of the morning, supping on rich and lavishly prepared dishes.

Throughout the years, Réveillon dinners became less and less celebrated in the old way until the early half of the 20th century, when they nearly disappeared altogether. Until someone came to the rescue. In 1988, the local non-profit organization French Quarter Festivals, Inc. (FQFI) came up with the brilliant idea to bring back the Réveillon tradition to the city and imbibe it with a fresh new feel. Each restaurant in the city was encouraged to participate by providing a Réveillon Menu to its patrons during the month of December, served at more reasonable hours during the day. Traditional dishes can be found on these decadent pre-fixe menus but chefs are encouraged to put their own twist on their special Réveillon feast.

Nearly a century ago, this French Quarter fixture on Conti Street opened its doors to the public. Named after its original owner and chef, Joseph Broussard, the building itself speaks to the history of the city and its residents. It played the role of home to his wife, Rosalie Broussard, and her relatives before transforming into a celebrated five-star dining establishment. Living above the restaurant until their deaths in 1966, the couple left behind a legacy that still continues to thrive to this day.
