It’s no wonder Alton Brown named Tucson Tamale Company the “Best Tamale in the US.” It all began over nine years ago, when chef Todd Martin chose to leave his corporate Fortune 500 career to follow his passion for hand-making tamales for friends and family. Since opening the doors of Tucson Tamale Company in the Old Pueblo, Todd and his passion project have earned the respect and accolades they truly deserve. With three restaurants throughout Tucson serving over 25 different tamales, the Tucson Tamale Company has become our go-to place to enjoy these favorite southwestern dishes.

Barrio Bread – French Toast

Not only does owner and baker Don Guerra serve up some of Tucson’s most creative and delicious bread — he also puts a great amount of thought and integrity into creating and serving these masterpieces. Named for the Spanish word for “neighborhood”, Barrio was meant to serve the local Tucson community first and foremost, providing locals with fresh bread made with high-quality ingredients. Don even sources his grain from local Sonoran wheat and his patrons thank him for it. In fact, he has been dubbed the “Don of Bread” by Tucson Weekly and has developed such a large community following that they’ve even worn his bakery door down with all the foot traffic his bakery receives.

Dragoon Brewing Co. – IPA

Dragoon Brewing Co.

In 2011, beer enthusiast Tristan White opened Dragoon Brewing Co., a small local brewery, with co-founders Bruce and Eric Greene. The trio shared a vision of pouring their passion into every single pint. Since then, their three-man crew has grown into a team of over 15. But the mission to focus on a quality product remains and the initial offering of two beers on tap has grown to a selection of over 30 different beers available throughout the year. If you’re a Tucson local, you’re likely to recognize the name of their most popular brews available on tap throughout the city — like Dragoon IPA, Stronghold Session Ale and Monsooner — all brewed with seasonally grown wheat.
