Best Ways to Warm Up During A Boston Winter

There’s no way around it – Boston is frigid in the winter! It’s cold, it’s painful, it’s soul-sucking. But it can also be charming and cozy if you go into the season prepared and with the right attitude. Here are a few recommendations to warm up in Boston this winter.

Drink Whiskey

(Warning: please only do this in the comfort of our restaurant or a similarly awesome bar or distillery, as alcohol actually lowers your core body temperature while making you feel warmer!)

ANYWAY, a trip to Boston Harbor Distillery (BHD) is definitely a great indoor winter activity (and they’ve extended their hours for the winter months!). The distillery is steeped in really cool Boston history; its vast brick building was first built in 1859, and was used as everything from a horseshoe factory to an ice cream house. Many of the spirits produced by Boston Harbor Distillery are named for past occupants of the building. Putnam New England Rye Whiskey is named for Silas Putnam, the wily horseshoe manufacturer that supplied both sides in the Civil War. And Seymour’s Boston Cream Liqueur and Seymour’s Local Roast Coffee Liqueur draw their titles from the Seymour Ice Cream Company.

If you’re sticking closer to downtown, Loews Boston Hotel has joined forces with BHD as part of our Flavor by Loews Hotels program to offer uniquely local cocktails exclusively at Precinct Kitchen + Bar. Make sure to try a Putnam Flip, made from BHD Putnam Rye, lemon, ginger maple syrup and egg!

Visit the Boston Public Library

You don’t have to nestle into a corner with a book to love the Boston Public Library (even though you can!). The space is beautiful, and is a great reprieve from the frosty temps around the city. The library has been considered one of the five most important libraries in the country for the breadth (23 million items) and historical importance of its collection. And it’s not lacking in architectural points of interest either. Grab a “literary latte” on your way out to warm up at the Newsfeed Café (seriously, that’s what they’re called!).

Cheer For Your Favorite Team

A Dining Room Table

Between the Bruins, Celtics and Patriots, winter is an exciting season for Boston sports fans. Now we can’t, in good conscience, recommend a trip to cheer on the Patriots at home in December since this is a list of recommendations to stay warm in winter. Gillette Stadium is outside, and a December gust will surely take you down. However, there are awesome sports bars in Boston to catch the game in a cozy booth with a beverage. Saddle up to the bar at Precinct Kitchen + Bar for a WARM viewing spot!

See the Boston Pops

During the holiday season, the legendary Boston Pops Orchestra becomes the Holiday Pops. It is a seasonal tradition that you won’t want to miss, featuring holiday music favorites, a sing-along, and a visit from Santa Claus. Symphony Hall is decked out, and you can even wear your Santa or elf hat to keep your ears warm ;-) Find out more about schedules and ticketing here.

Stay warm, Boston!
