Time for a Minnesota Twins Baseball Game

Twins baseball typically signals the arrival of warmer weather in Minnesota. (At least it does most years when unseasonably cold temperatures and April snow don’t disrupt the schedule!) On a warm spring or summer day it’s hard to imagine a better place to watch baseball than at Target Field, a gorgeous open-air stadium in the heart of downtown Minneapolis. (This being Minnesota, the stadium has plenty of enclosed viewing areas if the weather turns too hot or too cold.)

Twins baseball returned to the outdoors at Target Field in 2010 after 28 seasons of playing indoors.   Located in downtown's historic Warehouse District, Target Field is consistently ranked one of the best ballparks in the nation and is one of our favorite neighbors at Loews Minneapolis. When you stay with us you’ll be a quick walk (only 1500 feet) away from the stadium. If you’re visiting Minneapolis in spring or summer, add Target Field to your list to watch baseball, soak up the rays, and enjoy skyline views — in no particular order.

As you stroll from the hotel and down 6th street, you’ll soon enter Target Plaza, the gateway to Target Field. At that point, you’re officially in Twins Territory.  Along the plaza, there are statues of former players, managers, and owners, along with nine 40-foot tall topiaries which turn red during the game for each inning played. There’s also “The Wave” wind veil, the largest piece of public art in Minnesota, which comes to life on windy days and is lit up at night. The exterior of Target Field is covered in Kasota limestone instead of the usual brick and steel, which gives this modern stadium a uniquely local look.

Target Field has been named the greenest ballpark in the U.S. and is the only stadium in the world to earn three levels of LEED Certification. The majority of concessions at the stadium are served in compostable packaging and both plastic bottles and aluminum cans are recycled. In addition to these efforts, nearly 8 million gallons of rainwater have been captured, purified, and reused.

A Sign On A Baseball Field

Mr. Minneapolis and Mr. St. Paul

Points of interest at the stadium include the Minnie & Paul sign in the outfield with the twins Minneapolis and St. Paul shaking hands across the Mississippi River. New this season, and open to all fans, is Bat & Barrel, located on the Club Level in Right Field, where you can see the 1987 and 1991 World Series trophies on display.  At 2 Gingers Pub, on the Terrace Level behind home plate, you can meet the Twins organist Sue Nelson, who’s held the enviable job since 1999.

Of course, there are plenty of local food and drink options to be discovered at the stadium. If you arrive thirsty, stop at the draft beer wall on the Concourse Level which has 22 taps featuring local beer, including a collaboration between Surly Brewing Company and former Twins player Glen Perkins. If it’s a ballpark snack you’re after, visit the Minnie & Paul’s Twins-themed pub, located on the Club Level near Center Field, where you can enjoy pizza from local restaurant Pizza Luce and burgers from Red Cow. A Minneapolis made sausage from Kramarczuck’s is a great handheld snack while you’re exploring, and be sure to leave room for the creative ice cream flavors handmade locally by Izzy’s ice cream.

Minneapolis Skyline View from Target Field

With a beautiful stadium and incredible skyline views at Target Field(can you spot Loews Minneapolis from your seat?), you can have a fun time regardless of the weather and the score. Let’s hope the Twins are hitting home runs so you can be treated to Prince’s “Let’s Go Crazy” each time they hit one out of the park. Even if you’re not the biggest fan of baseball, or of the Twins, you'll be a fan of Target Field.
